INDUSTRY CHECKLIST · RETAIL SHOPS

The retail shop insurance checklist

QUICK ANSWER

A retail store needs a business owner's policy covering liability and the inventory, fixtures and build-out, workers' compensation once it has employees, and cyber coverage because it handles card payments. Shops that sell their own products add product liability, shops with cash add crime coverage, and landlords and franchisors ask to be named on the liability policy.

Who asks for what

Who What they usually want to see
Landlord or mall GL with the landlord as additional insured, property on improvements, business income, workers' compensation, umbrella in larger centers
Franchisor The franchise schedule: GL, property, workers' compensation, EPLI, sometimes cyber
Lender Property coverage with the lender as loss payee
Marketplace or wholesaler Product liability at a stated limit naming them
Payment processor Cyber or data breach coverage in the merchant terms

How to check what you already have

  1. BOP dec page. Liability each occurrence and aggregate; property section with building (if you own it), business personal property, tenant improvements and business income.
  2. Property limit versus stock. Compare the business personal property limit with your inventory at its peak, plus fixtures and equipment.
  3. Forms list. Cyber, data breach, crime and equipment breakdown often appear as endorsements. Note the sublimits.
  4. Workers' compensation. Payroll estimate including seasonal hires.
  5. Certificates owed. Landlord, franchisor, lender, marketplace: each with a current certificate and the right additional insured or loss payee wording.

What usually goes wrong

  • Underinsured inventory discovered after a fire or flood.
  • Theft sublimits on the categories most worth stealing.
  • No cyber at a store that runs loyalty accounts and online orders.
  • Business income too short for a rebuild that takes longer than the policy's period of restoration.

Renewal timing

Renew before the busy season, not during it. Put the expiration in the wallet, update the inventory figure, and compare sixty days out so new limits are in place when the stock arrives.

Questions people actually ask

Is my inventory covered for what it cost or what it sells for?

Usually for what it would cost you to replace it, not its retail price. Check the business personal property limit against your peak stock; seasonal businesses can buy a peak-season increase.

Do I need product liability for things I only resell?

A BOP's general liability includes products–completed operations for goods you sell. If you import, make, alter or private-label products, tell the carrier; the exposure and the forms are different.

Does my policy cover a break-in and the stolen stock?

Theft of inventory is a property claim and is usually covered, subject to the deductible and any theft sublimits for jewelry, electronics or similar categories. Money taken is a crime claim and needs crime coverage.

My store sells online too. Does that change anything?

It adds cyber exposure, product shipments in transit, and often a marketplace agreement with its own insurance requirements. The wallet reads those requirements from the contract if you upload it.
